Barcelona head into their Champions League clash with confidence, and young defender Pau Cubarsi made that clear while addressing the media ahead of the second leg clash against Newcastle United.

Speaking before the game, Cubarsi first reflected on the team’s physical and mental condition, stressing that the squad feels refreshed and ready for the challenge ahead.

“Actually, really good. We’ve been able to recharge our batteries; we’re coming in with good momentum and solid results.

“We have to try to find those little moments to mentally prepare for the next match. Tomorrow we’ll give it our all, as always.”

Barcelona elections

The young defender was also asked about the recent presidential elections and the moment shared with Joan Laporta.

Keeping things balanced, Cubarsi said that he prefers to stay out of politics while still showing respect.

“Everyone is free to express themselves as they wish, to vote for whoever they see fit. I’ll keep my vote to myself. I congratulate Laporta.”

Expanding on Laporta’s visit to the squad, Cubarsi revealed the president’s message to the players.

“He came to visit us, and we congratulated him. He told us to be ourselves, to keep it up, and to continue being a family.”

Turning focus fully to the match, Cubarsi explained the importance of the occasion and what is at stake.

“It’s a very important match. We have to get through this round no matter what. We’ll try to do it with the help of all the Culers.”

Despite his young age, the defender showed maturity when discussing pressure and expectations at the highest level.

“We’re very young. We don’t have much experience, but we’re eager to give our all for this club.

“We know how to play these kinds of matches; we need maximum concentration. Anything is possible.

“No matter your age, you can perform at your highest level, give your all, and have your coach’s confidence.”

Cubarsi also highlighted improvements at the back under Hansi Flick, pointing to tactical adjustments and growing trust within the squad.

“Maybe we’ve tweaked a few things that weren’t quite working out for us at the start of the season. Now, we’re at a high level.

“Every available player can perform at their best, and that can also help the team. If we trust the coaching staff, we can achieve great things.”

On Cancelo and Gerard Martin

When asked about Joao Cancelo, Cubarsi did not hold back in his praise, especially given the support he received early on.

“We’re really happy he’s back. When I arrived, he had just started. And he helped me a lot with settling in.

“He’s an amazing player, and it’s great to have such a versatile player. I’m really happy because he’s another member of the Barça family.”

He also discussed his newly formed partnership with Gerard Martin, stating,

“Gerard Martin is having a spectacular season. He feels comfortable, and I try to help him in any way I can.

“He can play as a full-back, as a centre-back… but everyone can play and perform at their best. I’m very happy with him.”

He also took a moment to encourage young teammates like Xavi Espart and Alvaro Cortes, offering simple but valuable advice.

“I tell them to stay calm and enjoy themselves. They’re here to play soccer. They shouldn’t worry about what’s going on around them. They’re doing a spectacular job.”

Facing Newcastle United

Discussing the challenge of facing top forwards, Cubarsi remained focused on his own performance.

“In a Champions League match, you have to face the best in the world game after game. For me, that’s not a problem.

“I focus on myself, on the strengths I can bring to the table, and on how I can mentally prepare myself to give my best.”

On Newcastle’s profile and experience, he refused to underestimate the opponent while keeping Barcelona’s mindset clear.

“The most important thing is how you approach the game, how you start it, and the things you need to do well.

“Even if you played in the semifinals last season, you have to give it your all. We’ll give it our all.”

Finally, when asked about Newcastle’s danger man, Anthony Gordon and the intensity they bring, Cubarsi kept the focus internal.

“Newcastle has some great players. Gordon is probably ready, but we’re not focusing on our opponents, who are sure to be strong. We need to focus on ourselves,” he concluded.
