David Cubillas will remain the reference striker for a generation at CD Castellón. Across six seasons he won two promotions, captained the side and became Cubigol. Hours after confirming his retirement, he set out his five favourite moments.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, one was the step into professional football in July 2020, when Castellón beat Cornellà in the play-off final to reach Segunda División. Cubillas had already decided the semi-final with an extra-time winner against Peña Deportiva. He had long dreamed of doing it with his hometown club, even if the pandemic kept fans away, and he savoured that Málaga week and the goal.

Two years earlier, in 2018 and in his first season at the club, he was central to the promotion out of Tercera División. He recalls the ties, above all Sant Andreu, as among the toughest yet most enjoyable he has played. The pressure was intense and that rise became the base for what followed.

He also points to the 2023 play-off semi-final against Dépor, sealed by his decisive strike in extra-time. He considers it the best match of his life, for the opponent, the impact and a packed Castalia.

Another thread is the bond with supporters, from thunderous welcomes at Castalia before big fixtures and play-offs to major away followings. Even in Tercera, trips to Levante’s reserves and Sant Andreu stand out.

Finally, he highlights the homage to Racic at Castalia before a Tercera meeting with Orihuela, a moment of respect and gratitude towards a club legend that has stayed with him.
