Cuca played down talk of reinforcements at Santos, saying deals can change quickly and that he preferred to savour the current mood.

According to Diario Do Peixe, he said at the start of July that the priority was to pay the current squad and look to the academy. A week ago, after losing to Athletico-PR in the Brasileirão, he appealed to the board to lift the transfer ban, citing a short group.

Over the weekend the board shifted stance on the market, having initially focused on clearing overdue wages. They explored a loan swap with Racing (Argentina), centre-back Adonis Frías for right-back Gastón Martinera, and interest also surfaced in a midfielder from Atlético-MG.

After the victory over Vasco at São Januário, a direct battle in the Brasileirão that moved the club out of the relegation zone, Cuca was asked if he was optimistic about arrivals. He declined to discuss names and kept expectations guarded.

He recalled that, when he was at Galo, he once outlined a target’s qualities and the player presented at Cruzeiro the next day. For now, he said optimism should come from the team playing well, adding he would only believe signings when they materialise.
