Curtis Jones looks nailed on for a major reward after a crazy evening. Eight players withdrew from England duty on Monday.
Liverpool’s Curtis Jones should finally get his England debut this international break after a series of withdrawals on Monday. The Scouser has been included in the squad before - but circumstances always prevented an appearance.
Jones, after all, was in the provisional squad for Euro 2024. Gareth Southgate clearly didn’t view him as particularly close to the final squad, though, as he didn’t use the Liverpool man in any friendlies. Jones was, ultimately, cut before the tournament.
Then came the last international break. Jones was with England but his partner then gave birth, prompting his own withdrawal.
But things should finally correct themselves this time around. Jones isn’t just in the squad but a series of regulars withdrew on Monday.
Levi Colwill, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnol and Aaron Ramsdale are all gone. Palmer and Rice’s exits, in particular, create room for Jones in midfield.
It looks nailed on, then, that Jones gets his England debut. A major step in his career - and one that’s massively deserved.
