Cusco players took to social media to criticise Paraguayan officials Derlis López, on the pitch, and Fernando López, on VAR, after their 2-0 defeat to Flamengo at Garcilaso de la Veja on Wednesday night. According to Globo.com, the posts followed the sides’ Libertadores opener.

Their complaints centred on two moments, a potential red card for Plata for a stamp on Colitto, and a Ruidías strike ruled out by VAR for a marginal offside that even the drawn lines did not seem to settle.

Four Cusco players shared stills of the incidents. Ruidías, who had the goal disallowed, expressed outrage, while Valenzuela called the decision incredible. Goalkeeper Pedro Díaz reposted without comment, and full-back Zevallos said he could not see an offside and questioned the lack of a dismissal.

Peruvian forward Cueva, formerly of São Paulo and Santos and now at Juan Pablo II College in the country’s first division, also posted, directing an insult at the referee while watching on television.

Head coach Alejandro Orfila later argued in his press conference that Plata should have been sent off, said the VAR erred on the offside, and insisted the disallowed goal was valid. He added that Flamengo do not need such decisions and that he accepts responsibility when he makes mistakes.

Refereeing analyst PC Oliveira judged Plata’s challenge to merit only a yellow card, not a red, and noted the Flamengo forward was not sanctioned by the on-field referee.
