Cyriel Dessers claims he’s staying but Rangers fans are less convinced

Cyriel Dessers got in the news midweek after telling a supporter outside Ibrox that he will be staying at Rangers. The Nigerian forward was approached after Plzen and happily assured the fan of his commitment to the club. It was a popular titbit at the time and briefly lifted spirits. However the mood has shifted again after his latest performance against Dundee. Supporters are split over whether he should continue leading the line. Many feel ready to hand him his P45 while others still back him to deliver.

The Dundee display did little to change the narrative. Rangers laboured badly and failed to break down stubborn opposition. Dessers had limited service and wasn’t able to make things happen. It has become a recurring theme this season and patience in the stands is wearing thin. Even so his overall record remains better than any of his current team-mates. The Ibrox side simply do not possess another striker with his combination of physicality and work rate.

Cyriel Dessers’ Rangers stats are simply staggering when compared to recent signings in the same position. He has produced goals and assists consistently in the league and in Europe. Supporters can point to his erratic finishing but they cannot deny his ability to find space. That knack of arriving in dangerous positions is why managers continue to select him.

Recent rumours about an approach from Greece circulated before the Dundee fixture. Cyriel Dessers Rangers exit latest as AEK offer significant update detailed how one club had explored a deal. Nothing materialised and Dessers made clear he wanted to remain in Glasgow. His comments outside Ibrox this week have only reinforced that stance. Cyriel Dessers says he’s staying at Ibrox.

Manager Russell Martin has made some bizarre claims about the forward’s form. He insists Dessers offers more than just goals and believes the Nigerian plays a key role in the overall attacking shape. While there is truth in that argument it is hard to convince frustrated fans. They want a striker who can take the few chances that arise in tight matches.

A report from The Scottish Sun underlined how Rangers value Dessers despite outside interest. Selling him now would leave the squad without a proven central striker. With no sign of a suitable replacement in the market it makes sense to keep him.

Dessers remains the best option Rangers have at centre forward. His ability to battle defenders, link play and score in big moments sets him apart from the rest. If the service improves and confidence returns he could yet turn the tide of opinion back in his favour. For now he stays and the debate rumbles on.
