Cyriel Dessers hands in Rangers transfer request

As Rangers fans are learning this morning, rather out of nowhere Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers is now very likely to leave Rangers for Greece with PAOK, with negotiations already at an advanced stage and the former Cremonese and Feyenoord man already having handed in a transfer request.

It’s an interesting twist, the controversial goalscorer being one of the first to arrive for preseason training, but then, as we explained to some sceptical readers regarding James Tavernier and his potential exit (he was at preseason yesterday too), Antonio Colak went as far as the Germany summer camp last year before his move was sealed.

It just depends on the nature of the move – Glen Kamara was completely AWOL during summer because he was working on his move out, and had been given permission.

But this is getting away from the point – we learned of PAOK’s interest in Dessers yesterday but wanted to see how it developed before reporting it.

We’re not always that interested in exclusives or ‘being first’, being accurate and seeing how things develop is more important – we were certainly let down by that Igamane information though, does happen!

As for Dessers himself, we don’t blame him for wanting to leave, which he does.

He’s been heavily-maligned by this support – despite impressive stats, the Rangers fanbase hasn’t been supportive or kind to him, blaming him a lot and scapegoating him hugely, despite a generally higher level of efficiency for his part than Lawrence Shankland.

In short, he doesn’t feel loved at this club, and is happy to leave now, so it’s probably best for all parties if a fee can be agreed and he moves onto where he feels more content.

The fact is he’ll never be universally-loved at Rangers, hell, barely even universally tolerated.

The further fact Rangers fans had a sarcastic chant for him, a backhanded compliment of telling him he used to be sh*t but now he’s ok rather tells you the esteem he’s held in.

Not a lot!
