Sunderland have been handed a major boost, with Dan Ballard agreeing an extension to his contract and confirmation expected shortly, Sunderland Echo understands.
The centre-back put pen to paper before the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium on Saturday. He has become a key figure for Régis Le Bris since promotion to the Premier League.
As with much of last season’s squad, his terms improved after promotion, but interest in his form prompted Sunderland to act. His previous deal ran to summer 2028, and it is thought he has added a further year.
The development aids director of football Florent Ghisolfi as he steps up plans for the summer window. Early talks had stalled and any external interest risked weakening Sunderland’s hand, but they now have greater security with the 26-year-old again committing his long-term future.
Ballard will be honoured at the North East Football Writers’ Association dinner at the Ramside tonight, receiving the Player of the Year award. He is the first men’s winner since Jermain Defoe in 2016.
Ghisolfi said in November that Ballard is discreet, hardworking, unafraid and talented, and that those traits reflect the energy and mentality Sunderland want to maintain around the squad.
