Dan Ballard has signed a 12-month contract extension at Sunderland, keeping the 26-year-old at the club until 2029. The new deal recognises a standout year in the Premier League, and he impressed again in the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Saturday.
Having overcome earlier fitness concerns, he has emerged as a leader. "In terms of squad-building our attitude is to first improve the squad as individuals," said Florent Ghisolfi, speaking to The Athletic in December.
An Arsenal graduate, Ballard had loans at Swindon, Blackpool and Millwall before joining Sunderland in 2022, shortly after the club’s return to the Championship following four seasons in League One.
Last May his header against Coventry City in the play-offs took Sunderland to Wembley and promotion. He scored on the opening day against West Ham, then against Arsenal at the Stadium of Light. On Sunday night he will collect the North-East Football Writers’ player of the season award.
The extension rewards a player in his prime and is likely to address salary considerations, with promoted regulars often earning less than new arrivals.
Supporters will welcome it, Ballard is a favourite for his quality, key goals and connection to the promotion side. While others such as captain Dan Neil have felt the hard reality of the Premier League step, Ballard and Trai Hume have prospered.
