Real Madrid said in a statement that Dani Ceballos has left the club by mutual agreement, one year before his contract was due to expire. The announcement came on Friday.

The 29-year-old joined Madrid in 2017 and had been under contract until 2027. He is now being linked with a return to Betis Sevilla, his former club, or as a target for Ajax Amsterdam.

Ceballos collected 16 trophies with Madrid, including three Champions Leagues, yet never secured a long-term starting role despite 215 appearances. He has 13 Spain caps and one international goal.

He spent two seasons on loan at Arsenal between 2019 and 2021, playing 77 matches, before returning to Spain.

Used primarily as a central midfielder, he logged 826 minutes across 23 outings last season. New head coach José Mourinho was not planning to use him in the coming months.
