Daniel Farke has left the door open to recruiting another striker this month, while stressing any move must suit squad balance. The stance follows Leeds United’s first deal of the window.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Facundo Buonanotte ended his Chelsea loan after limited minutes, with Brighton sending him to Elland Road for the second half of the season. He had all but agreed a summer switch to Leeds before opting for Chelsea’s Champions League offer, a chapter addressed when talks resumed around Christmas.
Farke declined to discuss Buonanotte until completion, but faced questions on centre forward options. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has made the number nine role his own, with Lukas Nmecha used as partner and cover. Joel Piroe remains a bench option, and Noah Okafor has occasionally supported Calvert-Lewin as a second striker.
Calvert-Lewin’s targetman qualities are pivotal, and any absence would test Leeds’ depth. Nmecha has yet to match his hold-up play when leading the line alone.
Farke called the striker call a nuanced one, saying he always welcomes quality but will prioritise what is healthy for the group. He warned that too many options can dent confidence and team spirit, yet he would not rule out a quality signing.
He added there is room to strengthen one, two or three positions without a major overhaul, and he does not want a bloated squad. The plan is to add one or two if the right chances arise, mindful of the club’s Profitability and Sustainability position, with centre forward among the areas being monitored.
