Daniel Levy was removed as Tottenham Hotspur chairman by the club’s majority owners, despite earlier announcements presenting the exit as a voluntary resignation.

Tottenham initially confirmed on Thursday that Levy had ‘stepped down’ from his role, releasing statements from him and new non-executive chairman Peter Charrington.

However, sources close to the Lewis family, who control the club, have revealed that the decision was taken out of Levy’s hands following months of internal review.

Levy was informed on Thursday morning that his tenure was over. The Lewis family had already hired consultancy firm Gibb River to assess the club’s operations earlier this year.

Staff were asked to provide feedback on how Spurs could improve on the pitch. That review played a key role in shaping the ownership’s decision to move in a new direction.

Levy’s removal is the most significant step in a summer of sweeping change at Tottenham. Chief football officer Scott Munn departed, and long-serving board member Donna-Maria Cullen resigned.

Ange Postecoglou was sacked as manager just two weeks after guiding the club to Europa League success.

His replacement, Thomas Frank, became the 14th permanent manager appointed during Levy’s reign.

In the boardroom, former Arsenal executive Vinai Venkatesham was appointed as chief executive, while Charrington joined the board in March and subsequently assumed the new chairman role.

Charrington described the development as the beginning of a ‘new era of leadership’ and said the club’s priority was now to establish stability and empower Venkatesham’s executive team.

A source close to the Lewis family echoed that message, stressing that the owners were determined to deliver more consistent success on the pitch.

Levy oversaw the move to the £1 billion stadium that opened in 2019, built a modern training base at Hotspur Way, and turned Spurs into one of the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs.

Under his chairmanship, the team reached the 2019 Champions League final and secured two trophies – the 2008 League Cup and this year’s Europa League.

However, his time in charge was also marked by protests from supporters who criticised the club’s wage structure, frequent managerial changes and perceived lack of ambition.

While Levy described himself as ‘incredibly proud’ of building Spurs into a ‘global heavyweight’ in his farewell statement, many fans will view his removal as the necessary conclusion to a divisive era.
