Kieran Trippier was Diego Simeone’s go-to right-back last season and at the beginning of the current season. The Englishman had developed his game under the Argentine tactician and turned into one of the world’s best full-backs during his stay at Atletico Madrid.
However, Trippier left the club in the winter transfer market as he chose a move to Newcastle United. To fill the void left by the full-back, Simeone opted to sign Daniel Wass from Valencia.
The two parties reached an agreement at a figure of €3 million, and Wass subsequently signed a contract with Los Rojiblancos for 18 months. However, there is an option to extend until 2024.
Speaking about his move to Atletico Madrid, Wass recently revealed that he did not expect it. The Danish international was preparing a move back to his home country, but could not refute the chance to play under Simeone when the offer eventually arrived.
“I had the idea that I’d return to Brøndby this summer, so that I could finish my career there. But when Atleti’s offer came, I think everyone saw that it was something I really wanted, and my family could also see that Atlético is something you can’t say no to.”
Since his move to Madrid, Wass has only played one game which was his start against Barcelona. After his appearance at Camp Nou, the Dane suffered a ligament injury that kept him out for over a month.
Most recently, he started on the bench for the team’s games against Alaves, Manchester City, and Mallorca.
