Danilo has revealed he was battling severe knee pain before Flamengo’s Libertadores final against Palmeiras in Lima. The centre-back still started and delivered a decisive display.
Rising to meet an Arrascaeta cross, Danilo headed the only goal and later blocked a late effort from Vitor Roque. He partnered Léo Pereira at the heart of the defence as Flamengo secured the title in Peru. “I had two hamstring injuries and had to spend 40 days out,” he said, speaking to Flamengo TV.
“It is not easy to come back and feel good physically. I tried not to even think about it, when the doctors asked I dodged it. But the knee was bad, very bad.”
“I could not even put a sock on. Márcio, the physio, would ask if I was better, I would pull on my shorts and could not bend my leg. We laugh now, but at the time it was very serious,” he added.
Danilo is back in Peru now as Flamengo open their Libertadores group against Cusco on Wednesday, eight April. Kick-off is 21:30 Brasília time at Estádio Garcilaso de Veiga.
