Albion's summer signing marked his first competitive outing for the club against Rotherham United with a brace

West Bromwich Albion supporters have been full of excitement this summer after ending last season strongly under James Morrison, and the former midfielder's permanent reign as head coach also got off to the perfect start in the EFL Cup first round.

The Baggies were drawn against Rotherham United of League Two at the New York Stadium, and Morrison's side comfortably sealed their passage into round two for the first time in four seasons with a 4-1 scoreline.

Albion have already made six signings this summer, and plenty of those were on display in South Yorkshire ahead of the Championship season kicking off this Saturday against Norwich City.

There appears to have been a strong onus on the West Midlands outfit to recruit players with strong current ability and future potential, and that has already been showcased by Jimmy-Jay Morgan, and his exploits in South Yorkshire garnered plenty of love from supporters, teammates and even some names formerly associated with West Brom.

The versatile attacker saw a permanent exit from Stamford Bridge sanctioned in June in a deal which is reportedly worth £4m, with Chelsea retaining a high sell-on fee.

After netting 14 times in 39 appearances for Peterborough United in League One last term, the 20-year-old continued his positive form with a five-goal pre-season for his new employers, before translating such form into the competitive scene.

Indeed, Morgan took just eight minutes to find the back of the net against the Millers, before adding his second with 29 minutes to play with a smart header.

After being replaced by Mikey Johnston four minutes later, the debutant took to Instagram to issue his reaction, saying: Buzzing! First goals in the shirt. See those of you travelling on Saturday."

Among those in the replies was former Baggies loanee, Danny Imray, who debuted for Wrexham - after a £5m switch from Crystal Palace - against Middlesbrough on Friday, with the full-back saying: "Love it you!!!"

It wasn't just those in the stands who were impressed by Morgan's display against Alex Bruce's side, and now the hope for Morrison is that the England youth international will be off the mark in the Championship as soon as possible.

Such was the attacking strength and intent shown by the Scotsman's side, they had 18 shots overall at Tedd Cann's goal with 10 of those being on target, as well as over 70% of the overall possession.

Speaking post-match, the 40-year-old said: "It was good for JJ Morgan to continue scoring goals like he has been in pre-season, it was nice for Felix Horn Myhre to get on the pitch and score, it was good for Harry (Whitwell) to score, it was also nice to see Mikey (Johnston) play, to get Nolan Galves 90 minutes and to get Barney Stewart on the pitch. I could go on.

"We're taking this competition seriously. It was great to get competing again in a stadium with the fans there. The fans travelled in numbers, so we owed them a big performance and we needed to show them and the tournament respect. We tried to keep going until the end and get our clean sheet, but unfortunately we couldn't do that and that's where we can improve," he added.

Last season was Albion's worst league finish since before 2000, even with a strong end to the season under Morrison, but such team spirit and confidence has clearly continued and been added to the transfer market.

Having fended off competition for the signature of Galves, as well as having the duo of Morgan and Barney Stewart leading the line, there is plenty for those at The Hawthorns to be excited about.

That said, some areas of the squad are still in need of further depth between now and September 1st, but if further bodies can be recruited alongside a strong start to the season, the top eight could be a realistic possibility for the club.
