Danny McGrath Attracting European Interest Ahead of January Move

Danny McGrath is beginning to draw increased attention as the January transfer window approaches, with the Ireland Under 19 midfielder still weighing up his next move after leaving Lommel SK during the summer.

The 18 year old has been without a club since mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with the Belgian side, bringing an end to a two year spell that offered flashes of promise but limited opportunities. McGrath made six senior appearances for Lommel, five of them in the Challenger Pro League last season, and registered one assist. While the move abroad was viewed positively for his development, the lack of regular football ultimately led to a decision to pursue other options.

During the summer, McGrath spent time on trial with Brentford, training with the club’s Under 21 side. That spell gave him exposure to an English academy environment at a high level, but it did not result in a contract and he has since returned to Ireland. He has been based around Balbriggan, keeping sharp and continuing his work away from the spotlight while interest quietly builds.

Despite the Brentford link, sources suggest that a move to England is not the most likely outcome at this stage. The same applies to a return to the League of Ireland. While neither route is completely ruled out, the expectation is that McGrath is more likely to continue his career on the continent, where his technical profile is seen as a more natural fit.

At 1.73 metres, McGrath is not a physically imposing midfielder, and that has shaped thinking around his next destination. His game is built around receiving the ball on the turn, playing through pressure and moving possession intelligently from deeper areas. He is a tidy dribbler, a clean passer and someone who plays with composure beyond his years. In less physical leagues, those qualities tend to be encouraged rather than compromised.

McGrath’s background also adds to his appeal abroad. He has a Brazilian mother, is fluent in Portuguese and is eligible to represent Ireland, England, Japan or Brazil internationally. He has already been recognised at underage level in Ireland and was named the 2024 FAI Irish Under 18 Player of the Year, a reflection of how highly he is rated within the game.

Since leaving Lommel, McGrath has signed with Zurda Agency, who also represent former Ireland international goalkeeper Darren Randolph. Randolph’s involvement is viewed as a significant boost, given his experience and his network of contacts across Ireland and Europe. He is expected to work closely with McGrath and the agency as they look to identify the right club ahead of January.

Those who know McGrath well often point to his mentality as one of his strongest traits. Coaches at St Kevin’s Boys, Bohemians and within the Irish underage setup have consistently spoken about his attitude, his professionalism and his willingness to learn. That reputation has followed him since his return home and is helping to keep conversations going behind the scenes.

“Danny has had a really good upbringing in terms of his football and has already enjoyed personal success in his own right in terms of international recognition.” Craig Sexton on Danny McGrath

For now, there is nothing concrete in place. Interest exists, discussions are ongoing and patience remains the approach. With the January window approaching, a move that keeps Danny McGrath on the continent looks the most probable next step for a player still seen as one with plenty of upside and time on his side.
