While we agree to an extent with many Rangers fans who argue for judging Danny Rohl on his own players, we do urge caution. Danny Rohl may have useful football contacts, particularly Hansi Flick at Barcelona. However, he cannot use that to sign Lionel Messi or similar elite players. Danny Rohl’s transfers have pressure attached.
At best, he may secure one or two Barcelona youth players. That would still bring complaints about inexperience. Rangers need proper alpha players. Then again, when Rangers sign older players, accusations of pensioners always appear. You cannot keep everyone happy.
The main concern is Rohl having control of signings next month, which he will. The two additions he already made are staff. Both came from lower league environments. Scott Fry and Tristan Steiner arrived from lower league German and English football.
Rohl handpicked both men himself. He had full veto power. There was no influence from above. Rohl is a data-driven individual. That is the direction football is taking. At least, that is the approach at Rangers.
It does not really work. However, it is the system Rangers are using. Rohl stated that this system led to Fry and Steiner. So if he chooses lower league staff, what will he choose for players?
The canvas will be his. It will be a tabula rasa. Danny Rohl will choose his players in January. Even with a limited window, he will have full jurisdiction. The incoming players will be his responsibility.
If early links are accurate, concerns grow. They include lower league German players and a Kazakhstani winger. That does not excite us. Nothing linked suggests a major step up from the current squad.
That seems to be the pattern these days. We will see what happens next month. However, if his first two staff signings indicate anything, Rangers may not improve much. The current roster may remain largely the same level. Let’s seriously hope not. Danny Rohl’s transfers must be bang on.
