Rangers’ search for a new head coach has taken another twist after Danny Rohl formally withdrew from contention for the Ibrox hot seat, according to reports from BBC Sport. The former Sheffield Wednesday boss becomes the second high-profile name to pull out of the process within a week, following Steven Gerrard’s decision to reject a return to Glasgow.
Rohl, 36, had been viewed as a leading candidate to replace Russell Martin, who was dismissed earlier this month after a dismal run that left Rangers eighth in the Scottish Premiership. However, despite holding positive discussions with the club, the German is understood to have stepped back amid delays in Rangers’ decision-making process.
Rohl’s managerial stock remains high after steering Wednesday clear of relegation and to a mid-table finish last season, having previously served as assistant at Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and with the German national team.
Attention now turns to Kevin Muscat, the former Rangers midfielder currently in charge of Shanghai Port in China. Muscat remains the frontrunner but would not be available until late November due to club commitments.
In the meantime, Under-19 coach Steven Smith will lead the team against Dundee United on Saturday, assisted by Brian Gilmour, Rhys Owen, and Sal Bibbo, as Rangers continue their search for stability both on and off the pitch.
