Darío Benedetto has joined Barcelona Sporting Club in Ecuador after leaving Newell’s Old Boys as a free agent. The 35-year-old striker arrives to bolster the Guayaquil side.

According to SuperDepor.com, he agreed the move in recent hours and will continue his career in Ecuadorian football, aiming to reboot and add experience and stature to the squad.

His availability smoothed negotiations, with no transfer fee involved. After his Newell’s deal ended, Benedetto assessed alternatives and chose Barcelona’s project and its constant prominence in South American football.

His spell in Rosario was uneven. He did not secure a regular starting role, his minutes tailed off and the contract concluded with the forward holding his registration.

A product of Arsenal de Sarandí, he also featured for Defensa y Justicia, Gimnasia de Jujuy and Tijuana in Mexico. His most notable chapter came at Boca Juniors, with goals, silverware and continental recognition, plus appearances for Argentina.

In Guayaquil they value his experience, penalty-area presence and competitive edge. The hierarchy and coaching staff believe he could lead the line and offer dressing-room leadership.

Those close to the player say the sporting proposal was decisive. Benedetto sees this challenge as a chance to rediscover form, regain confidence and become influential again.

For Barcelona, the signing fits a clear plan to elevate the squad with seasoned winners. The club hope he adapts quickly and responds with goals and performances at home and abroad.
