David Alaba was one of two Real Madrid veterans who left the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of last season, following the expiry of his contract.
Alaba’s departure came against the backdrop of a disappointing spell at the Bernabeu, which was marred by injuries and a lack of game time.
However, Alaba remains grateful to Real Madrid, as admitted by the player himself in the wake of Austria’s defeat to Spain in the World Cup Round of 32.
Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t AS), Alaba reflected warmly on a chapter of his career that, despite its difficult ending, delivered enormous success.

“I have wonderful years with me. It was a very important stage in my career and in my life: I learned so much and experienced special moments, especially because my time in Madrid was a great success,” Alaba said.
The veteran did not shy away from the challenges that marked his final seasons in the Spanish capital, with injuries cruelly disrupting the latter part of his stay.
“Of course, the end was difficult. First, the serious knee injury, then some muscle problems prevented me from having the consistency and rhythm I would have liked.
“Ultimately, I only have wonderful memories, and now we’ll see what the future holds: all we can do is wait,” he added.
During his time at the Bernabeu, Alaba featured in 132 competitive matches for Real Madrid, notably securing two Champions League titles and two La Liga titles.

Alaba is currently a free agent and has not ruled out starting a new adventure, as far as his future is concerned.
“A new chapter begins, and I’m open to everything, without ruling anything out, but I want to stay at the highest possible level,” the defender said.
It appears the former Bayern Munich star is keen on remaining in Europe, for now, with Italian clubs such as Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan being linked with a move for the veteran.
Premier League and Saudi Arabian clubs have also sounded out a move for the Austrian international, as he looks to take the next step in his career.
