The Ammies went into the game with a 2-1 lead on aggregate, after an impressive showing away from home in the first-leg of this tie.

Salford went on to make the perfect start to the second-leg, as they took the lead midway through the second-half, as Daniel Udoh opened the scoring for the hosts.

However, that two-goal lead was cut in quick succession, as Kieran Green and Jaze Kabia netted for Grimsby in the space of four minutes, which took the semi-final into extra time.

With the contest looking as though it was heading to penalties, Kallum Cesay fired home with just three minutes of the tie remaining, which sparked jubilant scenes from the players and supporters.

Salford will take on Notts County in the League Two play-off final, in what is highly likely to be a closely-fought battle between two teams that will fancy their chances of booking their spot in the third tier of English football for next season.

The Manchester United connection with Salford City is public knowledge, with former Manchester United players Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Nicky Butt all previously having a share of the club.

Gary Neville and Beckham are the only former Manchester United players that still have a share in the club, with a new deal being struck back in 2025 which saw a range of new business people come on board, including co-chairman Declan Kelly.

Beckham couldn't be in attendance for play-off semi-final win against Grimsby Town, but he was clearly watching on, as he reacted on his official Instagram account via his story.

It'll be interesting to see whether Beckham will attend the final at Wembley to cheer on Salford against Notts County on Monday 25th May, 2026, and you'd imagine he will be, given he was present at their last venture where fans were permitted to the national stadium when they defeated AFC Fylde in the National League play-off final in 2019.

Salford City's League One ambitions could be getting realised

Salford are clearly an ambitious club with wealthy owners, and they'll be desperate to get out of the fourth tier of English football as soon as possible.

The Ammies are in their seventh year in League Two following their quick ascent through non league, and plenty of the club's supporters will fancy their chances of moving further up the football pyramid this term.

It's been a hugely impressive rise so far for Salford - a lowly club for much of their existence since 1940, four promotions in five years between 2015 and 2019 took them to the EFL, but the growth has somewhat stagnated.

Salford certainly have the edge in the head-to-head record against Notts County, having won the last five matches against them, and only losing once in their history to their League Two rivals.

It doesn't get much bigger than a play-off final at Wembley Stadium though, and any previous form or head-to-head records shouldn't be taken into account, as the stakes couldn't be higher.
