David Bruce is understood to be moving to reunite with long-serving Sunderland figure Oscar Chamberlain at Sheffield Wednesday as their off-field rebuild continues.

According to Sunderland Echo, Chamberlain has left Sunderland and is edging towards Hillsborough, where he would link up with Bruce after his own switch from Wearside earlier this year.

Bruce became chief executive following a takeover by American consortium Arise Capital Partners, and is helping to lead a reset following a turbulent period under former chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

Chamberlain spent 12 years at Sunderland, shaping branding, digital, marketing and communications, with some supporter-facing work winning awards. His prospective move is expected to be into a newly created position rather than a like-for-like replacement for communications head Trevor Braithwait, who stays in role.

The hire aligns with Wednesday’s plan to strengthen their senior structure under Arise Capital Partners, and further appointments are anticipated. Preparing for League One, the club are also expected to confirm Simon Wilson as sporting director, and he is believed to have begun outline work around transfers and contract talks.

For Sunderland, his exit is another behind-the-scenes change after a historic seventh-placed Premier League finish and Europa League qualification. Ian Taylor, formerly of Burnley, has been appointed interim head of communications, with a full-time vacancy now advertised.
