Sheffield Wednesday have appointed former Sunderland and Manchester City figure Simon Wilson as sporting director. The club confirmed the newly created role, with Wilson arriving after relegation from the Championship.
Wilson departs Stockport County after last season, having helped lift the club from the National League to League One. They reached last month’s League One play-off final, losing to Bolton Wanderers.
He initially joined Stockport as director of football and later became chief executive, overseeing significant progress at Edgeley Park.
His career also includes roles with Southampton, Leicester City, Sparta Prague and Ajax, alongside earlier spells at Manchester City and Sunderland.
Wilson said Wednesday’s identity and Hillsborough’s energy, backed by passionate support, should shape the team they build, how they play and the culture they create. He added that progress would need patience, consistency and alignment, with no quick fixes and a long-term, sustainable approach.
Chief executive David Bruce called the appointment an important moment, saying the club are building for the future and need experienced leadership. He hailed Wilson’s strategic acumen, elite football knowledge and operational record, framing the move as part of modernising the football structure for long-term success.
