From the back of the queue to focal point, David has surged at Vasco under Renato Gaúcho after two strong displays.

Globo.com reports that two months ago he was close to joining Vitória and out of Fernando Diniz’s plans. Vasco even accepted the offer, but the deal broke down at signing, so he stayed at São Januário as further bids failed to materialise.

At the start of the year he was back-up to Andrés Gómez on the left and behind Nuno Moreira, Marino Hinestroza, Adson and Rojas for the wide roles. He was not tried through the middle while Brenner and Spinelli shared minutes after Rayan and Vegetti left.

In 2024 he was a regular and finished with 11 goal involvements. A ruptured ACL kept him out until mid 2025, and he struggled to regain his place.

Following Diniz’s dismissal, interim Bruno Lazaroni introduced him in the second half against Fluminense chasing a leveller, which did not come. He then impressed in training and started the clássico with Fluminense, standing out for his duels and runs, and was involved when Andrés Gómez won a second-half penalty that Brenner missed.

On arrival, Renato Gaúcho favoured players with more experience in Brazilian football and better fitness, benching Brenner, Spinelli and Hinestroza and using David at centre forward. His first outing under Renato brought a 2-1 win over Palmeiras at São Januário, and he set up Thiago Mendes for the equaliser after holding off Gustavo Gómez.

He is expected to start again at Cruzeiro at the Mineirão at 20h30 on Sunday in the sixth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro, another chance to cement his place and build further credit.
