David Ferguson is set for a key role at Gateshead under new manager Lee Cattermole this National League season. The former Sunderland and Hartlepool United left-back has been operating in the middle of defence.

According to Sunderland Echo, the Wearside-born 32-year-old joined the Heed last summer and endured mixed fortunes. A poor first half of the campaign was followed by Rob Elliot’s appointment, which sparked an upturn culminating in a remarkable escape from relegation to the National League North.

Used centrally during the run-in, Ferguson provided a calming presence. He has continued in that role across Gateshead’s first three friendlies, a win at Northern League Division One side Blyth Town followed by draws at Heaton Stannington and National League North newcomers Hebburn Town.

Ferguson previously trained alongside Cattermole while a young player at Sunderland, where he was an unused substitute for a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in May 2013. He later featured for Blackpool, York City and Hartlepool.

Speaking after the Hebburn draw, Cattermole said Ferguson has been excellent in pre-season and looks in outstanding condition. He praised his character, noted previous work together in Portugal with Sunderland, and said the defender has settled into the middle of a back three, using his game understanding to good effect. Cattermole added that Ferguson is going to be a big player for Gateshead.
