On the latest Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index, host Dave Davis and David Lynch made one point repeatedly clear, Liverpool need attacking reinforcements this summer.
The discussion covered squad depth, outgoing players and the profile required under Arne Slot, before turning to one reported target, Yan Diomande. While no move was confirmed, Lynch’s comments offered a revealing look at Liverpool’s thinking.
Lynch was emphatic about the scale of the task ahead. “What we can guarantee at the moment is that Liverpool, they do need sign wingers, plural, in my opinion.”
That single word, plural, tells its own story. Liverpool are not searching for one cosmetic addition. They appear to need multiple options capable of refreshing a forward line that has lacked depth and variety.
Lynch also noted that Liverpool are likely to seek “multifunctional forwards”, players who can operate wide but also cover central areas when required.
That would make sense given the demands of modern squad building. Flexibility matters, especially for a club balancing domestic and European football.
When discussing possible names, Lynch specifically mentioned Diomande.
“Diomande is one that’s definitely on the radar that they’re looking at. Whether they progress with that, we’ll see.”
That wording matters. It stops short of saying a transfer is imminent, but it does place the RB Leipzig attacker within Liverpool’s field of view.
Liverpool’s recruitment model has often focused on young, high upside players capable of developing into elite contributors. Diomande would fit that broader profile, particularly if the club are seeking pace, directness and one v one quality.

Lynch also touched on the type of winger Liverpool may prioritise. While discussing other targets, he asked whether the club now need “more one V one specialists”.
That line feels significant.
Liverpool’s attack has often looked short of players who can beat defenders cleanly, disrupt settled blocks and create danger without needing elaborate build up. In difficult away games or low margin matches, that skill can transform outcomes.
If Diomande is being monitored, it suggests Liverpool may be targeting exactly that attribute.
The pressure now falls on Fenway Sports Group and the sporting hierarchy. Lynch warned that Liverpool must not repeat previous summers where good sales were not matched by equally sharp recruitment.
“They have to make the right decisions about the ones who come in,” he said.
That applies to every forward signing. Liverpool need players who can contribute immediately, raise the level of competition and suit Slot’s tactical demands.
Whether Yan Diomande becomes one of those arrivals remains to be seen. What feels clearer is the bigger picture.
Liverpool know they need a new attacker, perhaps more than one. They know the profile required. And they know another hesitant transfer window would carry a heavy cost.
For now, Diomande is a name to watch, but the real headline is Liverpool’s urgent need to strengthen the front line.
