Liverpool booked their place in the next round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham at Anfield, on a night when Andoni Iraola made a host of changes and handed opportunities to several youngsters and fringe players.

Speaking in his post match reaction on his YouTube channel, David Lynch described it as an “important one for Liverpool” and picked out several performances which could give Iraola plenty to think about.

Here are Lynch’s five key takeaways from Liverpool’s Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham.

Youngsters set Liverpool’s pressing standard

Lynch’s first takeaway centred on the energy Liverpool’s youngsters brought to the performance.

He said they were “so important to the victory”, particularly in “setting the tone in the press, bringing a real energy to things”.

Liverpool had been inconsistent with their pressing earlier in the season, but Lynch felt this performance represented a noticeable change.

“They really kick the aggression up in this game,” he said, describing it as “the most aggressive pressing performance we’ve probably seen from Liverpool so far this season”.

That also provided a challenge for Liverpool’s senior players.

“The more experienced players come back in, they’ve got to live up to that,” Lynch added.

Trey Nyoni makes his Liverpool case

Lynch’s second and biggest takeaway was the performance of Trey Nyoni.

With questions surrounding Liverpool’s midfield, Lynch viewed the Carabao Cup tie as a major opportunity for the youngster.

“I don’t think he could have done much more than his performance tonight,” Lynch said. “I thought he was absolutely superb in everything that he did today.”

The numbers supported that assessment. Nyoni won four of his five duels, made three tackles and recorded six recoveries. In possession, he completed 37 of his 39 passes, a 95% completion rate, including both of his attempted long balls.

Lynch was particularly impressed by Nyoni’s involvement in Liverpool’s second goal, when he regained possession before immediately moving the ball forward.

“This is exactly what Andoni Iraola wants from his midfielders,” he said.

For Lynch, Nyoni’s message to the manager was clear: “I’m essentially knocking on the manager’s door here and saying you have to start me.”

Mac Allister returns to his best

Alexis Mac Allister provided Lynch’s third major talking point.

Lynch admitted he had concerns about the midfielder heading into the season, but his assessment has changed significantly.

“He has been unbelievable really so far this season, hasn’t he?” Lynch said.

Against Tottenham, Mac Allister won five of his 10 ground duels and made five defensive contributions, while also scoring and providing an assist.

Lynch added: “I think really he is back to his best.”

He also described Mac Allister as “the best midfielder in Liverpool’s Premier League title winning season” and believes maintaining this level could have a major impact.

“If he is that again, if he’s playing at that level, then it will help Liverpool to be a better team.”

Mamardashvili shows his shot stopping quality

Giorgi Mamardashvili’s performance was Lynch’s fourth takeaway.

The goalkeeper made an error around Tottenham’s goal, but responded with five saves during an impressive display.

Lynch highlighted stops from Lucas Bergvall and Mohammed Kudus before describing another save following a huge deflection as “unbelievable” and “one of the best saves you were ever likely to see”.

Mamardashvili prevented 1.26 expected goals on target.

“What he did in terms of his shot stopping tonight was absolutely spot on,” Lynch said.

He ultimately described it as “a brilliant performance” and felt the goalkeeper had “a big, big hand in Liverpool winning the game”.

Fringe players give Iraola more options

Lynch’s fifth takeaway was the contribution from Liverpool’s wider squad.

Lewis Koumas earned praise for his work rate, with Lynch saying: “Wow, he worked his socks off. Really, really ran himself into the ground.”

Dominik Szoboszlai also came from the bench and produced an “unbelievable goal to seal the game for Liverpool”, while Ryan Gravenberch recorded seven defensive contributions and three tackles in only 28 minutes.

That leaves Iraola with decisions to make, particularly in midfield following Nyoni’s performance.

For Lynch, however, the immediate focus could remain firmly on another positive result.

“Liverpool are in the next round of the Carabao Cup. Great effort by the youngsters. Great effort by the fringe players and a really enjoyable game.”

After the disappointment of the Fulham draw, Liverpool are back to winning ways, and several players have given Iraola plenty to consider ahead of the Premier League trip to Bournemouth.
