Liverpool’s Premier League title celebrations are still fresh, but one story continues to hover over Anfield — the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Thanks to insights from David Ornstein on The Athletic FC Podcast, there now appears to be a slender opening for Liverpool fans to dream of their hometown hero staying put.
For much of the past year, it has felt inevitable that Alexander-Arnold would join Real Madrid. His contract expires this summer, and the Spanish giants have been quietly confident of sealing his signature. Yet as David Ornstein cautiously noted, “It’s long since been the case that we’re expecting him to join Real Madrid, but of course, until absolutely everything is finalised, that door is just slightly ajar.”
The phrase “slightly ajar” may not inspire overwhelming confidence, but it is more optimism than Liverpool fans have been afforded for months. With Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk committing their futures to the Reds, there remains a genuine, if faint, possibility that Alexander-Arnold could be persuaded to do the same.

Alexander-Arnold is no ordinary player; he is Liverpool through and through. His ascent from the academy to club legend status — topped by another Premier League title under new boss Arne Slot — has only strengthened his ties to the Kop faithful. Ornstein’s suggestion of a potential rethink is not purely sentimental; success under Slot could genuinely shift Trent’s thinking.
Having now won the Premier League twice, the temptation to build an even greater legacy at Anfield could weigh heavily. As Ornstein hinted, “Having now won the Premier League title, there could be a potential shift in Alexander-Arnold’s thinking in regards to leaving Liverpool.”
Real Madrid’s allure is undeniable. The prestige, the history, the prospect of competing regularly for Champions League trophies, and the chance for Alexander-Arnold to enhance his Ballon d’Or aspirations are factors difficult to ignore. Madrid have been orchestrating his move with the diligence and stealth they reserve for their most prized signings.

Indeed, it is widely acknowledged that “Alexander-Arnold signing a new deal with Liverpool would have been seismic,” but right now, everything still points towards a departure.
Arne Slot’s revolution at Liverpool has begun in the best possible way with a title win, but keeping Alexander-Arnold would be a defining statement. Liverpool’s challenge is clear: offer not just financial incentives but a compelling vision of the future that resonates with Trent’s ambition.
The door is only slightly ajar, but that crack is enough for Liverpool to make their case once more.
As Liverpool fans, it’s easy to feel conflicted reading David Ornstein’s update. On one hand, the realistic part of us knows that Real Madrid’s lure — their glamour, trophies, and influence — is incredibly hard to resist. On the other hand, that little glimmer of hope Ornstein mentions feels enormous.
Trent isn’t just another player; he embodies the club’s ethos. His passion, his connection to the city, his impact on and off the pitch — it all means his departure would hurt more than most. But with a new era under Arne Slot beginning so promisingly, is it truly impossible for Trent to see his long-term future at Anfield?
Maybe the recent title win could serve as a pivotal moment. If Slot can convince Alexander-Arnold that Liverpool is still the best place for him to achieve greatness — lifting more Premier League and Champions League trophies, pushing for that Ballon d’Or dream — there is a path where he stays.
It may be a long shot, but if anyone could be persuaded to resist Madrid’s pull, it would be Trent. Until the ink is dry on a Real Madrid contract, Liverpool fans have every right to keep hoping.
