Manchester United remain some distance from where they aspire to be as a team. For INEOS, backing Ruben Amorim’s project cannot be limited to mere words; it must be reinforced by decisive action.

That means being prepared to spend and secure players who fit seamlessly into his system.

The left wing-back need

One area that Amorim has openly hinted at strengthening is the left wing-back position. Following the Everton game, he suggested he could use an Amad Diallo-type profile on the left flank.

Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot, while occasionally decent, have ultimately let the Portuguese tactician down. Their inconsistency has left United heavily right-sided, forcing Amorim to seek a more reliable option.

Initially, Federico Dimarco was strongly linked with a winter move to Old Trafford. However, it soon became clear the Inter Milan man had no intention of leaving San Siro. With Dimarco off the table, United must now turn their attention elsewhere.

Enter David Raum

Scouting the market, RB Leipzig’s David Raum emerges as a player United should seriously consider. Amorim prizes athleticism, demanding his players run relentlessly, and Raum epitomises that ethos.

The 27-year-old full-back boasts exceptional stamina and endurance, constantly charging up and down the flank. Beyond his tireless engine, Raum is widely regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s finest crossers.

With United’s current options struggling for consistency, Raum has sustained his high-level performances across the past three seasons. Moreover, his leadership qualities as a captain at Leipzig could provide much-needed guidance in United’s dressing room.

His arrival would not only stabilise the left side but also elevate teammates. Benjamin Sesko, for instance, thrived on Raum’s pinpoint deliveries in Germany, something United’s attack sorely lacks.

Why Raum fits United

Bundesliga.com describes Raum as a player reminiscent of a prime David Alaba, noting:

“He has the smarts to know when to come inside or when to race down the flank.”

“He possesses the vision to both find his attacking teammates within tight spaces as well as with crosses.” “Raum is also an aggressive attacking player, using his speed and strength to take on opposition full-backs.”

If these assessments hold, Raum would undoubtedly raise the level of United’s left wing.

Premier League ambition

Crucially, Raum himself has admitted his admiration for English football:

“I have never made a secret of the fact that the Premier League is something special. Not only is the league strong in general, but as a physically strong player, I really like it.”

Given his stated desire, persuading him to join United should not prove overly difficult. United going for him should not be out of the blue, as he is a player the Red Devils have already been linked with.
