Davide Ancelotti is due to become Lille’s new head coach while on Brazil World Cup duty, and could initially oversee pre-season from afar.
According to L'Équipe, the 36-year-old will replace Bruno Genesio and will be presented to the media at 14:00 on Monday at Domaine de Luchin. President Olivier Létang chose him ahead of Stéphane Dumont, Stefano Pioli and, notably, Thiago Motta.
Ancelotti has been in Brazil in recent days, serving as an assistant with the Seleçao on his father Carlo’s staff, and welcoming OL forward Endrick at Granja Comary. The multilingual coach speaks Italian, French, English, German and Spanish.
He is expected to fly to France for the unveiling, then return to the Seleçao for the tournament before coming back to lead Lille’s summer work. Depending on Brazil’s progress, with the final set for 19 July, the restart may begin without him.
He says he learned adaptability from his father, though he prefers a more vertical, bolder approach, a stance that appealed to Létang despite his limited head-coach résumé. He recognises his surname brings scrutiny and that he must earn trust.
Lille’s Champions League campaign, in the league phase, begins in the second week of September, giving him some runway. Formerly a fitness coach at Real Madrid and promoted 10 years ago to Bayern Munich’s lead assistant, he returns to European management six months after leaving Botafogo.
