Alphonso Davies is about to make his comeback at FC Bayern after a long injury break. Now Vincent Kompany has again commented on the situation ahead of the cup match against Union Berlin.
FC Bayern will have to plan without Alphonso Davies in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. According to coach Vincent Kompany, the Canadian will not be in the squad against Union Berlin after tearing his cruciate ligament. „It won’t be enough for Alphonso Davies in this game. Everyone is healthy, the squad looks good. But it’s winter, sometimes someone has a cold – but no big stories,“ said Kompany at the pre-match press conference.
Kompany did not give a prediction for Davies‘ comeback. Next Saturday’s Bundesliga match at VfB Stuttgart is also likely to come too soon for the 25-year-old. However, Alphonso Davies‘ long-awaited comeback seems conceivable the following week in the CL home match against Sporting Lisbon or the following weekend in the Bundesliga against Mainz 05.
Back in mid-November, Kompany was impressed by the fitness of his left-back at Säbener Straße. At the time, the coach praised him: „Alphonso is an incredible athlete. Even if he comes back and is not yet at 100 per cent, he is probably the fastest in the squad.“ Davies was also impressive in terms of his load management: „It looks as if he can’t get tired at all. That’s not normal when you come back after such a long injury.“

Looking ahead to the upcoming knockout game, Kompany warned of the opponent: „It’s a knockout game against a physically big team. Union will be hoping to have the moment.“ The coach still has the last few minutes of the Bundesliga duel against the same opponent in mind in particular: „We can do again what we showed in the last five minutes against Union. We’ve now done that against St. Pauli.“ The game in the Bundesliga around three weeks ago ended in a 2-2 draw.
As far as the goal is concerned, Kompany leaves no doubt: a place in the final is firmly in his sights. „We want to put in a good performance and win – we’re prepared for anything, for 90 minutes or 30 more. The pressure is positive.“ His personal motivation is also clear: „I want to go back to Berlin after the game, of course.“
