Sunderland have signed highly rated French left-back Dayann Methalie on a long-term contract, finalising the move before Saturday’s trip to Ipswich Town. According to Sunderland Echo, the agreement was wrapped up on Friday afternoon after an initial medical issue had stalled progress.

The fee remains undisclosed. Sunderland beat competition from clubs across Europe to land the France U21 international, a 6ft 2in 20-year-old. The club view him as physically powerful, technically sound and effective in both boxes.

Earlier this week, head coach Régis Le Bris said the squad were still working hard to strengthen before the window closes, and this arrival fits that plan.

Methalie said he is excited to join and cannot wait to wear the shirt for the first time. He called it a brilliant moment to arrive after following last season’s run to seventh and Europa League qualification, and is eager to experience the Premier League and Europa League with Sunderland fans.

He added that he knows how ambitious the club is and wants to help the team keep progressing, giving supporters plenty to be proud of. Methalie will wear the No6 shirt.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said Sunderland had tracked Methalie for a long time and believe he suits both their football identity and the personality they want in the group. He noted the interest from several clubs over the past year but highlighted Methalie’s strong desire to join. Ghisolfi said the focus now is on helping him settle quickly and continue developing.
