Sunderland have completed the signing of Dayann Methalie from Toulouse, according to Sunderland Echo, with the 20-year-old left-back agreeing a five-year contract. An official announcement is expected on Tuesday.

The deal is worth around £25.6m including add-ons, with about £24m guaranteed and the remainder linked to performance clauses.

Methalie arrived in the North East on Monday for his medical, which he passed, then was seen at the Stadium of Light that evening. Contracts have been signed and only the club’s formal announcement is outstanding.

The France youth international will wear the No.6 shirt. He had been Sunderland’s leading left-back target this summer, with negotiations with Toulouse stretching over several weeks before Florent Ghisolfi and his recruitment team struck an agreement.

Talks focused on valuation and the structure of payments, with earlier proposals rejected before terms were found. Régis Le Bris adds another major summer signing to his squad ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener away to Ipswich Town.
