Dayann Methalie is reported to favour a move to Sunderland, with negotiations over a fee continuing with Toulouse for the 20-year-old left-back.
Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri said on X that the defender wants Sunderland, adding that Toulouse now value him at £25.7m and that fresh talks are planned. The latest Sunderland offer is £21.4m including add-ons.
Sunderland have stepped up their pursuit this week and are understood to have agreed a five-year contract with Methalie, though an agreement between the clubs has yet to be reached.
L’Équipe previously reported an opening proposal of around £17m, which was rejected. Toulouse’s stance has been shaped by the sale of striker Emersonn to Ipswich Town for about £24m, with a further £3.5m in potential add-ons.
Methalie made 31 appearances in his breakthrough campaign and is regarded as one of the leading young prospects in French football. His preference is seen as encouragement for Régis Le Bris’s side amid rival interest.
Left-back is a priority for Sunderland after Dennis Cirkin’s exit. Reinildo is currently the only established senior in that role, while a right winger, a left-sided centre-back and extra attacking depth are also being explored, with quality stressed over quantity.
