D.C. United have officially hired their next manager in former New York Red Bulls Interim Manager, Tory Lesesne. The 40 year old manager brings head coaching experience from his almost full season in charge of the Red Bulls last year and as Manager of New Mexico United in the USL Championship between 2018-2021. After leaving his time coaching within the NCAA, Lesesne jumped into the professional ranks as an Assistant Manager for the Charleston Battery before jumping to being an Assistant Manager at the Charlotte Independence for three and a half seasons. In the summer of 2018, Lesesne was hired by New Mexico United to take over as their Manager and Technical Director. In 89 games in charge of New Mexico, Lesesne finished with a record of 36 wins, 26 draws, and 27 losses. After the 2021 USL Championship season, Lesesne left the organization and made the jump to Major League Soccer. He joined the New York Red Bulls as an Assistant Manager under then Manager, Gerhard Struber. After Struber departed the Red Bulls in 2023, Lesesne took over as Interim Manager. Lesesne led the Red Bulls into the MLS Cup Playoffs Play-In game, winning that, and then eventually losing to FC Cincinnati. Lesesne’s contract was not renewed by the Red Bulls after the season.
It will be interesting to see how D.C. United is run under Lesesne. Will D.C. operate with a similar formation as last season? Will Lesesne bring the Red Bull style with a 4-2-2-2 formation? D.C.’s front office and new Sporting Director Ally MacKay have made a ton of moves before this hiring, adding the likes of; Aaron Herrera, Jared Stroud, Lucas Bartlett, and Garrison Tubbs. Now, we will see how Lesesne can use these new additions to the club and whatever moves he can make heading into the 2024 season. Congratulations to Troy on his first official managerial gig in MLS!
