The future of Antonio Conte is unlikely to affect Kevin De Bruyne, as the Belgian superstar is set to honor his Napoli contract and stay put for at least another campaign. He’ll look to rectify what happened in the present one. His long-term injury dealt a massive blow to the Azzurri’s title hopes.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the midfielder isn’t looking for a way out. He is poised for a quiet summer, no matter what happens to the coach, who’s being courted by the Italian federation. The 34-year-old had started the campaign very well, scoring four goals and tallying two assists, before tearing a tendon in his thigh. He missed 28 fixtures, and the Partenopei needed a long time to find a way to properly fill the void.
De Bruyne signed a two-year deal with Napoli last summer, with an option for another campaign. There’s no release clause. While Conte’s presence might have contributed to his arrival, he also clicked with president Aurelio De Laurentiis, wholly embracing the project.
The Azzurri dropped two points against Parma in the last round but have never lost since the former Manchester City ace returned, rattling off four wins in a row.
It wasn’t a given, and participating in the UEFA Champions League is a big factor for this kind of players. He’s still rounding into shape, but he pulls the string even when he’s not superb. The tactic they have been using lately accommodates all their best midfielders better than what they were doing at the beginning of the season. If Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund aren’t going anywhere either, that’s a nice foundation to remain very ambitious.
