Spain progressed from the first phase with two wins and a draw, capped by a 1-0 victory over Uruguay and another clean sheet, results that keep alive hopes of going far.
As reported by El Periódico Mediterráneo, Luis de la Fuente was satisfied with the win, saying the match tested his side again and they knew how to handle a different kind of contest.
He downplayed Uruguay’s hardness and extreme intensity, stressing adaptation and praising his players.
Spain struggled to live with Marcelo Bielsa’s pressing, at times unable to put three or four passes together as fouls and stoppages broke the rhythm, yet he felt the team read the game and had to dig in defensively.
The major concern was Yeremi Pino, whose injury he called a shame. De la Fuente fears a broken collarbone that could rule the Crystal Palace winger out for the remainder of the World Cup, pending assessment.
He added that Nico Williams finished with muscle discomfort.
He deemed the win fair, noting there are times you simply have to win this way.
