Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern remains unclear for now. Contrary to earlier expectations, the decision on a possible contract extension for the sporting director is now not expected until toward the end of the year.

Max Eberl is under contract with FC Bayern through the end of June 2027. Whether the 52-year-old will remain at Säbener Straße beyond that date remains to be seen. While it had recently been assumed that the supervisory board would decide on the sporting director’s future as early as August, a different timeline now appears to be emerging.

As reported by the Münchner Abendzeitung, a final decision is not expected until November. This means Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund will have to wait a little longer.

First on the agenda for the supervisory board meeting in August is an analysis of the leadership duo’s work to date. The current transfer window is likely to play a decisive role in this assessment.

Solutions Sought for Players on the Transfer List

With Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari, FC Bayern has already signed two high-profile new players. The focus is now on further streamlining the roster and generating additional revenue. Suitable solutions are to be found, particularly for players such as João Palhinha, Bryan Zaragoza, and Sacha Boey.

If Eberl and Freund succeed in carrying out the planned sales, their chances of a contract extension will increase significantly. According tothe Abendzeitung, the market for potential successors is considered limited. According to the report, FC Bayern is aware that “the market for suitable external sports managers is limited.”

There have recently been positive signs for Eberl from another direction as well. According to information from Sport BILD, a contract extension for the sporting director has become more likely again in recent weeks. Reportedly, the powerful supervisory board has given the 52-year-old a positive interim assessment based on developments in the transfer market so far.

However, Eberl and Freund will have to be patient until a final decision is made. As things stand, it won’t be clear until November whether the leadership duo will continue to steer FC Bayern’s sporting fortunes beyond the summer of 2027.
