Decision time for Terzic at Athletic

Edin Terzic faces a summer of calls across every line as he sets about rebuilding Athletic. According to El Correo, more than 30 players will report to Lezama in July and at least 15 cases require decisions with the sporting department.

In goal, Julen Agirrezabala’s injuries limited his loan at Valencia to 18 games and he finished behind Dimitrievski. Extending that loan, or arranging another, appears logical, since he needs minutes and Unai Simón remains untouchable.

At right-back, Hugo Rincón returns from Girona after relegation, having played 33 times, and could be in the frame given this season’s issues, highlighted when Vivian started there in the final league game while Areso, Gorosabel and Lekue stayed on the bench. On the left, Yuri Berchiche is expected to renew for one more season, otherwise Adama Boiro would be the only specialist, and Terzic might even test Unai Gómez in that role.

Midfield is the busiest board. Ruiz de Galarreta, Jauregizar, the fit-again Beñat Prados and Peio Canales, back from Santander, look safe. Mikel Vesga could depart despite a year left, while Alejandro Rego may need a loan. Beñat Gerenabarrena is another loan candidate and Unai Vencedor, with a year remaining after spells at Eibar, Racing and Levante, might be sold.

Targets will hinge on needs and cost. If a positional holding midfielder is prioritised after conceding 58 league goals, the fourth worst figure, Urko González de Zarate would fit, though likely pricier than playmakers Unai López, who would be free, and Iván Martín, expected to be low cost after Girona’s drop.

Up front, calls loom on Nico Serrano, Maroan, Urko Izeta and Selton, plus debutants Eder García and Asier Hierro, with Serrano seemingly best placed to stay. Beyond that, the real test is reviving Berenguer, Sancet and the Williams brothers, and stabilising a leaky defence. How Terzic goes about it is unclear, but getting it wrong could prove costly.
