Conor Shaughnessy headed Portsmouth in front in the 42nd minute, setting the platform for a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town at Fratton Park.
The defender timed his run to the near post from Adrian Segečić's corner routine and glanced it in from close range. Moments later, the hosts struck again (44.), giving Shaughnessy a cushion to marshal the back line.
After the restart he took control of his box as the Tractor Boys pushed forward. He cleared danger repeatedly, shut down second balls and blocked shooting lanes, turning crosses away and denying follow-ups inside the area.
He finished with 6 clearances, 3 blocks and 3 tackles, plus 5 possessions won, underlining a display that combined penalty box authority with clean distribution. He completed 33 of 40 passes and scored with his only attempt, an efficient night at both ends.
Set pieces suited him. Portsmouth loaded the six-yard line, and his movement off the first contact created the decisive separation for the opener. From there his positioning on defensive corners and free kicks kept Ipswich's aerial threat at arm's length.
Portsmouth rise from 21st to 19th and host Leicester City next. The Tractor Boys remain second and host Middlesbrough next.
