Ludovic Ajorque struck in the 77th minute with a close-range finish, guiding Brest to a 2-0 win over Lorient.
Before the breakthrough, the 31-year-old forward forced Yvon Mvogo into a low save (59.), drifting left to find space and test the goalkeeper.
He then arrived in the six-yard area to sweep a fast break into the bottom right (77.), a poacher's finish that killed Lorient's momentum.
Ajorque's numbers underlined his grip on the contest: two attempts, both on target, seven touches in the box, five aerials won and nine ball recoveries. He also produced two key passes and made four clearances, offering an outlet and relief when Brest needed it.
In the fourth minute of second half stoppage time, he led another break to release Pathé Mboup, whose shot went wide.
Brest visit Lille next, while Lorient host Angers.
