Barcelona could have had Bernardo Silva in their squad this season, but the club ultimately decided against pursuing the Portuguese midfielder despite his desire to move to Camp Nou.

That is the clearest takeaway from Deco’s explanation of a transfer in an interview with SPORT that initially appeared to be heading Barcelona’s way.

Silva had announced his intention to leave Manchester City when his contract expired and was repeatedly linked with Barça before Real Madrid entered the picture.

Reports had even suggested that talks with Barcelona had advanced considerably.

The situation changed after Jose Mourinho pushed Madrid to pursue the veteran playmaker, eventually turning a potential Camp Nou arrival into a move to the Spanish capital.

Barcelona had their reasons for rejecting Bernardo Silva

On that note, Deco insists the decision was not simply about losing out to Madrid.

Deco acknowledged Silva’s quality but explained that Barcelona were not looking to strengthen his position.

More importantly, there were concerns surrounding the player’s expectations over his role and minutes.

“It wasn’t the position we were looking for. I love him – he’s one of the best in the world in his position and he’s Portuguese.

“He wanted to come to Barça, but it didn’t work out because we have certain criteria. If things go any further, there’s nothing we can do. It was a question of money and playing time.

“We’re not saying whether he’ll play or not. If his views differ from ours, there’s nothing we can do. He wanted to play, but I prefer to rely on our own players.”

Meanwhile, Deco was more forthcoming when assessing Real Madrid’s squad. He recognises the threat posed by their quality but insists Barcelona’s response will be to concentrate on themselves.

“They’ve got some brilliant players, a great manager – my manager at Porto. I wish them luck, though not against us.

“If they manage to build a team, it’ll be tough this season. We’ll just focus on our own game,” he concluded.

From Barça’s perspective, Bernardo Silva’s transfer should not necessarily be viewed as a failure.

The player wanted the move, yet Barcelona chose not to alter their recruitment priorities for him, which ultimately proved to be a blessing in disguise as Rodri was signed from Manchester City.
