Malo Gusto did not have a good season last year, often suffering from tactical demands which don’t suit his game.

But he remains an important part of the squad as Reece James’ main backup, and once again will play a huge amount this season. He was the starter last night against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup, and gave his thoughts on the game afterwards:

“It was a tough game, and we knew it would be before we came here,” the right back said to the club’s official website.

“We know that they play a lot with set-pieces and long throws, and in the first half, it was very complicated for us to get into the game. They play to their qualities, and we had to deal with that.”

Second half improvement helps Blues on says Gusto

Chelsea weren’t up to it in the first period against the League One team, but after half time some tactical tweaks and a couple of early goals made things a lot easier:

“The second half was much better for us. We showed more energy, more desire and kept fighting on the pitch. We’re happy to get to the next round,” Gusto said.

Chelsea hope tight win restored confidence

“We want to win this trophy for sure, and we are on the way. We know that last season was good for us in terms of trophies, so of course we want to do our best this season, and we knew it would be important to win now to keep going as far as possible.”

“We want to keep building confidence as a team, and go into the next game against Brighton with more confidence and more desire and try to win.”

Two defeats last week were a hammer blow to our confidence – let’s hope Gusto is right and the win from yesterday gets the Blues back on track. The problem is it wasn’t a very convincing win.
