Déjà vu for Wolverhampton and Liverpool

Liverpool return to Molineux this Friday night with a point to prove after suffering a shock defeat there in the Premier League earlier in the week. That result has added an extra layer of intrigue to this FA Cup 5th Round meeting with Wolves.
The visitors were beaten in a performance that exposed some uncharacteristic vulnerabilities, with Wolves taking full advantage in front of a buoyant home crowd. Now the two sides meet again just three days later, giving Liverpool an immediate chance to respond, save face for under-fire manager Arne Slot and avoid a second setback in the same venue.
For Wolves, that midweek victory was a rare moment of optimism in what has otherwise been a difficult season. Despite an upturn in recent performances, the Midlands club remain doomed for relegation.
A strong FA Cup showing, however, could offer supporters a welcome distraction and perhaps provide the belief needed for the final weeks of the league campaign – and promotion next season.
Gary O’Neil’s side have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks. After a long spell in which results stubbornly refused to reflect their effort levels, Wolves have begun to look more organised and confident, particularly at Molineux where the crowd can create a fiercely partisan atmosphere.
Their win over Liverpool demonstrated exactly how they can hurt bigger sides. Wolves were disciplined without the ball and quick to exploit transitions, striking when opportunities presented themselves. That approach could once again be key in the cup tie, especially against a Liverpool side that typically dominates possession and commits players forward.
Liverpool’s defeat earlier in the week will not have gone down well with Slot or the club’s supporters. His teams are rarely beaten twice in quick succession by the same opponent, and the Liverpool manager is likely to demand a sharp response.
The FA Cup remains an important competition for Liverpool and a chance to build momentum during the latter stages of the season. Slot may rotate parts of his squad, but even a reshuffled Liverpool side will contain considerable attacking quality and experience.
Much will depend on whether Liverpool can control the tempo more effectively than they did in midweek. When their pressing game functions properly, Liverpool are capable of overwhelming opponents and pinning them deep inside their own half. Wolves will again attempt to disrupt that rhythm by staying compact and looking to break quickly when possession is won.
Molineux could once again prove a significant factor. The stadium was rocking during Wolves’ recent victory and the players clearly fed off that energy. If the home side can keep the contest tight in the early stages, the crowd will sense another opportunity to unsettle their illustrious opponents.
For Wolves, progression in the FA Cup would represent a welcome boost during a season overshadowed by relegation fears. It would also underline the resilience they have shown in recent weeks as they attempt to claw their way back into survival contention.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will be determined to avoid embarrassment and reassert their authority. Having already been caught out once at Molineux this week, they know they cannot afford another off night.
The circumstances set up a fascinating cup tie: Wolves buoyed by a rare victory but fighting for their Premier League lives, and Liverpool seeking swift revenge after an unexpected defeat.
If the midweek encounter was anything to go by, this FA Cup clash could deliver plenty more drama.
