Eduardo Camavinga was one of the worst-affected Real Madrid players in the wake of their defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League earlier this month.

The midfielder faced intense criticism for his rash and immature play that led to his sending off, effectively killing any hopes of a late Real Madrid comeback.

Camavinga was seen crying in the dressing room, in the aftermath of the final and it appears the midfielder has yet to mentally recover from that incident.

Camavinga can’t catch a break

According to MARCA, Camavinga’s season has effectively come to a painful close, with the final few matches of the campaign doing little to help him rebuild the confidence that was so severely shaken in Munich.

His return to action at the Bernabeu against Alaves offered a cautious first step. Arbeloa opted to protect him from the crowd’s anger by keeping him on the bench initially, before bringing him on in the second half.

To his credit, Camavinga did not hide. At the final whistle, he went to acknowledge the fans directly, fully aware of the reception he risked receiving.

The trip to the Benito Villamarín against Betis, however, brought a fresh blow. With Tchouameni again unavailable, many expected Camavinga to step in but Arbeloa instead turned to Thiago Pitarch. It was a decision that surprised the Frenchman.

With the summer World Cup on the horizon, the situation carries added urgency for Camavinga.

The 21-year-old has told those close to him that he intends to fight for his place and has no intention of entertaining offers this summer. He remains under contract until 2029.

Real Madrid, though, are ready to sanction his sale and have placed a €70 million price tag on the former Rennes midfielder.
