Vasco are moving quickly to replace Fernando Diniz, focusing on an overseas appointment, with Martín Demichelis emerging as the front-runner from a four-man shortlist. He is currently without a club.

According to PaponaColina, the board met immediately after Diniz’s dismissal to define the ideal profile, mindful that 2026 investment demands stronger performances and tactical organisation. Brazilians Renato Gaúcho and Rafael Guanaes remain in consideration, though the focus is outside Brazil.

Demichelis is regarded internally as capable of installing an organised, competitive model at speed, and of handling high-pressure environments.

Vasco are also assessing Leonardo Jardim, viewed as a complex deal. Artur Jorge of Al-Rayyan in Qatar has a high salary of R$ three million, while Vítor Bruno, formerly Porto’s assistant, is seen as a modern alternative.

Sporting director Admar Lopes is central to the process, thanks to his European contacts and knowledge of the international market.

The former Argentina defender enjoyed a decorated playing career in Europe, notably at Bayern Munich. He began coaching in Bayern’s academy.

He later led River Plate to the Argentine league title, building a possession game with high pressing. His most recent job was with Monterrey in Mexico, and his profile suits Vasco’s need for rapid reorganisation.

Until a decision is made, Bruno Lazaroni will take charge against Santos in the Brazilian Championship. The club hope to accelerate the choice so the new coach can start quickly and shape immediate plans.
