According to a report from RMC Sport, Denis Zakaria (29) has replaced Krepin Diatta (26) in AS Monaco’s UEFA Champions League squad. The Swiss international midfielder was injured when the Principality club submitted their registered players for Europe’s premier knockout competition.
Previously, clubs have never been able to register players outside of the registration windows – at the start of the season, and in January, before the knockout stages of the competition begin. However, a revelation in UEFA’s rules has changed that outcome. The “temporary player” rule allows players to be registered in the league phase of the competition if a long-term injury or illness previously ruled them out. As a result, the Monaco captain replaces Diatta.
Zakaria back in action for Les Monégasques
The former Chelsea midfielder has been out of action for the Côte d’Azur club since mid-September after suffering from a hamstring injury. Zakaria has been unavailable for selection for two months with a muscular injury, but now looks to return to action after being registered in Monaco’s Champions League squad.
