Paul Pogba (32) made his anticipated return during AS Monaco’s 4-1 defeat to Stade Rennais over the weekend. La Pioche, prior to his nine-minute cameo, had not played for 26 months.

The Frenchman joined Monaco on a two-year deal in the summer, signing a first professional contract since his doping ban, which was reduced from four years to 18 months upon appeal. However, he had to wait to make his debut. It took him around three months to return to fitness, but his return was then further delayed by a minor muscle injury and then an ankle sprain.

Monaco will now hope for the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder to be an important string in their bow. And speaking ahead of Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Pafos, Denis Zakaria said that he believes La Pioche’s presence can prove the difference.

“I think, for sure, having Pogba in the team, can [make teams] scared. He is a great player,” said Zakaria, who sought to also highlight the overall quality of the team and the competition for places.
