Departing Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini says their 3-0 defeat to Argentina at Wembley is a warning that a rebuild is needed.

The match was staged between the reigning European and South American champions. Lautaro Martinez, Angel di Maria and Paulo Dybala struck for Argentina.

This was the 37-year-old's 117th and final appearance in the Azzurri jersey.

“We knew it would be difficult tonight. Naturally, we hoped to win a trophy, but that won't cancel out what we achieved in the past," Chiellini told RAI Sport.

“As I said in the press conference the other day, I expect a difficult period, we are looking at the changeover of an era and I hope all of Italy can stand by this squad, because it will need their support."
