Depay confident of another trophy, calls for ‘changes’ at Corinthians

After three months without scoring, Memphis Depay found the net and sealed Corinthians’ victory over Grêmio. After the match, in the mixed zone at Neo Química Arena, he spoke about his physical condition and emphasized his focus on winning titles with the club from Parque São Jorge.

“Physically, I’m better, I played 90 minutes. We had a week to prepare for the game, we rested well, and I’m better, I feel really good now. The pitch was a bit heavy today, but I feel good, I’m happy with my fitness and I feel like I’m improving,” began the number 10.

Riding high with the Netherlands national team and regaining his place in the Corinthians lineup, Depay was asked about a possible contract renewal, as his current deal runs until the middle of next year. However, according to journalist Marco Bello, the forward is dissatisfied with the club’s current political situation.

“That’s not something to answer right now. I’m happy here and focused on the Copa do Brasil and the Brasileirão, wanting to finish the year in the best way possible. We still have many games ahead, so that topic can be addressed later. I am happy here. I want to achieve great things, but for that to happen, both for me and for the club, some changes are needed that only those inside understand,” said Memphis.

The goal drought increased criticism towards the forward, especially given his performances with the national team. Despite this, he said he understands the fans’ perspective and is betting on confidence to change the team’s outlook and win a second title this season.

“We are at Corinthians, there’s a huge fanbase, a lot of passion. I understand they want us to compete for every title, I understand that sometimes they don’t like the way we play, or expect more from me, and that’s okay, I understand and agree with that. Up to a certain point, when I wasn’t physically well, I wasn’t the best on the field, but they can criticize and I accept that as a professional. I try to do my best, I have to work. I’m confident we’re still going to have a great season, even though it’s tough in the Brasileirão, but I believe we can turn things around and win another title this year as well,” he concluded.

After the victory, Corinthians will travel to Bragança Paulista to face Red Bull Bragantino in the 32nd round of the Brasileirão. The match will take place on Wednesday (5th), with Timão looking to secure their fourth consecutive win.
